Daniel Craig Flannel Shirt Jacket
Daniel Craig turned up at the Ed Sullivan Theater for his February 16th appearance on Stephen Colbert’s The Late Show looking pretty casual in a blue plaid flannel shirt jacket, a light grey scarf, a pair of faded jeans and well worn Crockett & Jones boots.
While Craig’s scarf game was on point (as usual), I was more stoked to see him rocking some old school workwear. While the exact maker of that shirt jacket still hasn’t been identified, Craig’s choice of outerwear is a classic design that looks like it could have come from a heritage brand like Filson, Woolrich, L.L. Bean, Pendleton or Johnson Woolen Mills.
In fact, given its similarity to a wool hunting jacket you’d find in a Sears or JC Penney catalog from the 1950s, this would be a perfect opportunity to hunt for an actual vintage piece, a lower cost used jacket from more traditional workwear company like Carhartt and Five Brothers or even skate and surf brands.
As we suggested when we looked at the chore coat Bond wore in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, check out Ebay, Etsy, Grailed, Poshmark and other re-selling platforms to see if anything catches your eye. Prefer something new? Read on! We have some solid alternatives below that will help give us the look we want.
Features Wanted for the Daniel Craig Flannel Shirt Jacket
- Oversized shirt jacket style with lining
- Two patch chest pockets with straight edge flaps
- Inset handwarmer hip pockets
- Throat latch at collar
- Curved hem
- Large scale blue, aqua and white plaid pattern fabric
There are three features that set Craig’s shirt jacket apart from your run-of-the-mill overshirt. First is the fabric. It’s looks to be a flannel. But it’s definitely a heavier weight, which makes me think it’s wool rather than cotton. Second is that oversized collar. And third is the throat latch. That’s a detail I couldn’t find on any of the alternatives.
For the options, I searched from high (Aimé Leon Dore, Isabel Marant, etc.) to low (your basic Amazon and AliExpress specials) and just about everything I could think of in between (Kith, Wax London, John Elliott, RRL and the like, as well as staples like Woolrich and Pendleton). Unfortunately I failed to turn up an exact match. But, as always, I’ll keep looking!
Best Option for the Daniel Craig Flannel Shirt Jacket
Dickies R2R Cotton Flannel Shirt Jacket in Cream and Airforce Blue Plaid: on sale for $58.50
I flipped back and forth a few times on what alternative to use as the Best Option. And in the end I decided this one from Dickies should come out on top. The pattern isn’t the best match for Craig’s version (a little too much bright blue, not enough aqua). But the plaid does have the right larger scale. And it checks most of our “Features Wanted” boxes: a slightly oversized fit, straight edges on the pocket flaps, handwarmer pockets, a quilted lining for added insulation. Plus it readily available from multiple retailers at a good sale price. I’ve linked to a company called Man Outfitters above (the have sizes small to XL in stock). But you can also find a size small at Urban Outfitters for $44.99 and sizes small to large for $71.99 at Nordstrom (in case you don’t mind paying up to order from a more well known vendor).
Under $100
Zara Plaid Overshirt in Blue: $69.99
The colors in that large scale plaid are definitely a couple of shades too dark. But Zara’s take on the shacket nails a lot of the other style details. And it should look pretty sharp paired with a grey scarf.
L.L. Bean Primaloft Line Shirt Jacket in Marine Blue Plaid: on sale for $79.99
Like the Dickies option, the plaid here is a little too bright. And the smaller scale checks kept it from being our Best Option. But that 80 gram PrimaLoft insulation should help keep you warm when things get a little chilly. L.L. Bean has sizes small to XXL in stock.
Under $200
Outerknown Blanket Shirt in Puget Plaid or Daylight Seaview Plaid: $148.00
Neither pattern is an exact match for Craig’s version. But both come pretty close, so I thought I’d leave the choice up to you. Made from a heavyweight organic cotton twill, this one is more “shirt” than “jacket”. So no insulating lining and no handwarmer pockets. However, it does have a more relaxed fit which makes it an easy piece to layer over a light sweater. The link above goes directly to the Outerknown website. You can also find it at Backcountry, and REI and Huckberry has sizes medium and large in the Puget Plaid on sale for $103.98.
Pendleton Board Shirt in Blue Original Surf Plaid: $149.00
A classic style made famous by the Beach Boys in the 1960s. In terms of the design, it’s probably the least like Craig’s shirt jacket. It’s made from a single layer of medium weight wool fabric with no additional lining or handwarmer pockets. And although the check pattern uses a very similar color combination, the smaller scale isn’t exactly what we want. However, if your vibe is more “SoCal surfer” than “retro workwear”, it’s a great choice for a timeless, “inspired by” piece. Plenty of sizes available on the Pendleton website.
